Writing Prompts for Membership AI
When you are working with the AI Campaign Builder or the AI Segment Builder, Membership AI begins with a prompt, a plain-language description of what you want. You don't need special phrasing or commands; just describe your goal in a way similar to how you'd explain it to a coworker.
The AI Campaign Builder
The AI Campaign Builder drafts your campaign plan with you, based on your description of the campaign outcome, timing, and who it's for. It will ask for information as it goes, but it’s helpful for your initial prompt to focus on the intention of your campaign:
What you want the campaign to accomplish
Who should receive it
Important dates or deadlines
Relevant links, like renewal, event, certification, or registration pages
Preferred tone, if it matters for this campaign
From there, the AI Campaign Builder will ask follow-up questions until it has a clear picture of the campaign you want. Once it does, it will also have you confirm configuration details, such as sender name and email address, subject line, and response workflows.
Example Prompts
"Build a membership renewal campaign for members whose renewal deadline is March 31."
"Create a new member onboarding campaign for members who joined in the last 30 days."
"Help me build a lapsed member win-back campaign for people who did not renew last year."
"Create a campaign to drive registrations for our annual conference. Here is the registration page: [link]."
"Build a profile update campaign asking members to confirm their primary contact and mailing address."
"Build a campaign to recruit volunteers for our upcoming events."
The AI Segment Builder
The AI Segment Builder builds the filters from your description of the contacts you're trying to group together and what they have in common: a shared demographic, response, or sentiment.
The builder will show you the filters it came up with and explain its reasoning, but if it is unsure about your description or it can’t find a good match, it will ask for clarification. In your prompt, you can reference tags, campaigns, questions, demographic data, subscription status, and even existing Segments and Signals to help the builder target exactly the Segment you’re looking for.
Because the AI Segment Builder works immediately from your initial description, it helps to include everything that matters upfront. If you want to refine the segment after seeing what it built, you can ask it to add, remove, or adjust filters, and it will iterate with you.
Example Prompts
“Create a segment of members who were asked about renewal but haven't responded.”
“Contacts who said they are interested in attending either of the upcoming sessions.”
“Build a segment with members who have renewed their membership within the last 60 days.”
“Contacts tagged as VIP who are subscribed to email, or anyone enrolled in the Welcome campaign.”
“Create a segment of contacts who signaled they were unhappy during onboarding”
“Contacts residing in any of the following states: [list].”
Tips for getting better results
Be specific. Naming real dates, thresholds, tag names, or campaign names gets you a much closer result on the first try than a general description.
Don't worry about wording it perfectly the first time. Both builders allow you to iterate until it’s what you want.
Pasting a relevant link (event page, registration form, etc.) in the AI Campaign Builder is often faster than typing out all the details yourself.
If a suggested prompt on the builder's home screen is close to what you want, click it and edit before sending rather than starting from scratch.
Help us improve
Membership AI is always learning. Use the thumbs up/down buttons in each chat message to let us know when the builder got something exceptionally right or missed the mark. Your feedback directly helps us improve the builders.
